Ford Tonneau Covers

Maintaining Ford Tonneau Covers

Considering the fact that your Ford's tonneau cover works hard to protect the vehicle's bed, and everything in it, it’s only right that you bestow a little TLC on it. As such, prolong its lifespan. Luckily they are easy to clean - a job that can be done in virtually no time at all.

So Where Do You Start?

It depends on the type of cover you have installed. Some vehicle owners leave their covers on when they put their vehicles through the car wash. Although it could get the job done, it is generally inadvisable since the PVC used can differ from supplier to supplier. That being said, we advise you to follow the instructions received when you made your purchase should they differ from those listed here.

What to use:

  • Mild carwash soap
  • Medium brush or kitchen scourers

What not to use:

  • Detergents
  • Strong soaps
  • High pressure washers
  • Excessively hot water

Once you have your brush or scourer, mix the soap in a bit of lukewarm water and wash both sides of the Ford's tonneau cover until clean. Use a paper towel, kitchen towel or other piece of clean material to dry when done.

At this point waxing is often a consideration among vehicle owners, especially since it can strengthen the PVC sheet, and therefore prolong its lifespan. We recommend referring to the documentation you received when you made your purchase, or that you get in touch with the retailer since there are some sheets incapable of accommodating wax.

More on Usage

Whether you live up in Gauteng or down in the Western Cape, South Africa's climate is pretty harsh. That means your Ford's tonneau cover will take quite a beating as time wears on, which means it's up to you to ensure that it's always in tip-top condition.

Inspect the surface area of the PVC sheet regularly for any holes or rents. Tiny ones can easily develop into large ones, which means repairs are important. Kits can typically be purchased from your retailer, or if they cannot sell you a repair kit, they'll be able to do the job themselves in virtually no time at all.

About Ford Tonneau Covers

If you're new to the scene, then this section is especially for you. These PVC sheets have been developed to help bakkie owners protect the contents of the vehicle's bed. The flexible material is very strong, and therefore very durable. It's also lighter than a canopy, and greatly reduces the vehicle's wind resistance during travel. For these very reasons they have become popular on South Africa roads.

In recent years different types of Ford tonneau covers have seen the light. They include the clip-on, half-moon zip and the traditional soft types. Each of these has its own associated benefit, and is suited to a particular purpose. But, since all of them are made from the same material, they'll all provide you with the same value for money in terms of quality and lifespan.
